Chanted Prayers

To find out when our chanted prayers (or pujas) are on, consult the calendar on the menu bar of the home page.

If you wish to submit your own prayer request click on the link at the bottom of this page.

To derive maximum benefit from prayer Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso explains:

“In general, prayers made by an assembly of many practitioners are very powerful and cannot be compared to the prayers of one or two people. The scriptures give the analogy of a broom. If we try to clean a floor with a few bristles we shall make little progress, but if we gather many bristles to make a broom we shall be successful.”

Everybody is welcome to attend these pujas and there is no charge.

Everybody is welcome

Heart Jewel with guided Lamrim meditation

Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays     9.30 – 10.45am

This practice is intended mainly for those with some familiarity with Kadampa teachings and want to develop a regular Lamrim meditation practice. The session begins with Liberating Prayer and then the teacher introduces the meditation. We are working our way through the 21 Lamrim meditations presented in The New Meditation Handbook. In general we will spend a week (ie. three sessions) on each meditation, and in each day a different aspect will be emphasized. After the explanation there is five minutes silence to calm our mind, and then we do the first half of the prayers until we reach the appropriate place for the meditation. Typically there will be about 20 minutes for the meditations, for which there will be minimal guidance (sometimes none). Then we continue with the puja, leaving five minutes silence for mahamudra meditation, and then we do the second half of the puja, the prayers to the Dharma Protector.

Wishfulfilling Jewel with Tsog

Thursdays   4.30 – 5.45pm

Heart Jewel and Wishfulling jewel practice are the heart practices of Kadampa Buddhism.

In the first part of this practice, we visualise Wisdom Buddha, Je Tsongkhapa, and make prayers and requests to purify negativity, accumulate merit and receive blessings or inspiration. The second part of this practice contains prayers to the Wisdom Buddha as the Dharma Protector, Dorje Shugden, to help us overcome obstacles to our meditation practice.

Offering to the Spiritual Guide

These prayers are done on the 10th and 25th of each month.

A powerful method to increase our compassion, wisdom and spiritual power.

The practice of relying upon a Spiritual Guide, is the root of the spiritual path and the foundation of all spiritual attainments. In Kadampa Buddhism, this Guru Yoga is practised in association with Je Tsongkhapa, an emanation of the Wisdom Buddha Manjushri.

Melodious Drum

These prayers are done on the 29th of each month.

Dorje Shugden always helps, guides, and protects pure and faithful practitioners by granting blessings, increasing their wisdom, fulfilling their positive wishes and bestowing success on all their virtuous activities. This extensive practice is usually performed once a month and is used for fulfilling our heart commitment to practise Lamrim, Lojong and Mahamudra and to rely upon the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden, regarding him as inseparable from our Spiritual Guide and Buddha, and for restoring any degenerate or broken commitments we may have incurred. Also included are Praise to Manjushri, the Guru yoga of Je Tsongkhapa, self-generation as Heruka, and the ritual for fulfilling and restoring our commitments with other Dharma Protectors.

Powa Ceremony

We normally hold these on the first Friday of each month at 7.00 pm, and these prayers can be done on request.

The practice of transference of consciousness, Powa Ceremony, is done on behalf of one or more deceased persons. Through doing Powa practice with faith, compassion, and concentration we can transfer the consciousness of those recently deceased to the Pure Land of a Buddha. If living beings have the opportunity to take rebirth in a Buddha’s Pure Land they will attain permanent liberation from suffering and experience pure and everlasting happiness. Our practice of this Powa Ceremony offers them this precious opportunity. By engaging in this practice we ourselves will create a great collection of virtue, which will also lead us into the pathway to the Pure Land.

Tara Prayers

These prayers are done on the 8th of each month

The Liberation from Sorrow prayers include praises to the twenty-one manifestations of Tara. Because these are Sutra, the actual words of Buddha, they are particularly powerful and blessed.

Tara is a female Buddha, a manifestation of the ultimate wisdom of all the Buddhas. Her name means ‘Rescuer’ because she rescues us from all outer and inner fears. Ultimately she rescues us from all suffering and guides us to full enlightenment. Like a mother she protects us from all internal and external dangers; she provides us with all the necessary conditions for our spiritual training, guides us and inspires us with her blessings as we progress along the spiritual path.
