The Endless River of Change

Day Course

How deep awareness of impermanence liberates us from emotional problems

On an intellectual level we understand impermanence. We know that from the moment we are born, everyone undergoes a continual process of change and that at some unknown point our physical body will definitely die. Inanimate things too, such as our house and car, change and decay from moment to moment. However much we may try to control other people, relationships, jobs, our environment, we can never really do so because everything by its very nature is changing, and our efforts to control are like trying to catch running water.

Although it’s easy to understand impermanence intellectually, it’s another thing to bring this understanding down to our heart and base our lives on it. Emotionally we don’t want to accept the implications of this reality. Instead, we deceive ourselves with regard to possessions, relationships and so on, viewing them as means to achieve real happiness and security, while in fact the most they can do is give some temporary relief from dissatisfaction and suffering. Buddha explains that meditating on impermanence is an excellent way to help solve the emotional problems we encounter in our everyday life, by changing our perspective and priorities. This course will focus on how transforming our mind through meditation on impermanence can transform our everyday life into a deeply joyful and meaningful experience.
