The Sword of Wisdom

Day Course

The fundamental reason why we experience so much suffering and dissatisfaction in our lives is that we do not see things as they really are. Our perception of the world, other people, and most importantly of ourselves is distorted and not in accord with reality. We instinctively perceive things to be “out there”, separate from our mind. The truth is that the world we perceive totally depends on the mind we perceive it with. For example, if our mind is distorted with fear and hatred, we will perceive a dark and hostile world, whereas if our mind is filled with real love we will experience a world filled with light, beauty and kindness.

This basic misperception of reality is called “self-grasping ignorance” in Buddhism, and it is the root of all other deluded and negative states of mind and all the suffering they produce. It is only by developing the wisdom that directly sees through this basic mistake that we can cut through this root and thereby permanently free our mind from all delusion and suffering.

This course is based on Geshe-la’s commentary to Je Tsongkhapa’s Three Principal Aspects of the Path, found in Mirror of Dharma with Additions. The three principal aspects of the path to enlightenment are Renunciation, Bodhichitta, and the Wisdom realizing ultimate truth. Renunciation is the topic of the course True Inner Freedom on 26th September; Bodhichitta the topic of this course, and wisdom realizing ultimate truth the topic of the course The Sword of Wisdom on 28th November. While it would be best to attend all three courses, each will be fairly self-contained so you can attend any course on its own if you prefer.

Plese let us know by 10th November if you have any food allergies.
