Who Are We Really?

Lecture

Distinguishing the false self from the true self

We all have a sense of I or me, thinking, for example: I am a woman or a man, I am angry, I feel hurt, I want this, etc. We take this “I” very seriously – everything to do with it seems like a big deal. But Buddha taught that the kind of self we normally perceive and grasp is a figment of our imagination and that believing that this false self is real is the source of all our suffering. However, this does not mean we do not exist at all. At present we are identifying ourselves incorrectly, but we can learn to identify ourselves correctly. This correct sense of “I” is the basis for the perfect inner freedom and bliss of enlightenment.
